Week 4: Kenya
My time in Africa has come to an end! A lot happened this past week. My last day with my class was on Wednesday. They put on a performance for me and the other volunteers at the end of the day. The kids walked in a fashion show, recited some poems, and danced. It was a fun way to celebrate our time together.
On Thursday, I went to two other programs. One was a school called KCC. We played with the kids there and ate lunch with them. Then we went to an internally displaced people’s camp. In 2007, after an election, there was a lot of disruption and a certain tribe of people were run from their homes. Many people were killed. They were were given this land to set up camps. While some have moved away since then, some people remain. We visited a school there and gave the kids a snack. Families here have experienced so much trauma.
On Friday, we went to Hell’s Gate National Park. we rode through the park on a bike, right bedside zebras and giraffes! It was surreal. After the 5 mile bike ride, we went for a hike. We got to see pride rock (from the lion king). Also, Simba means lion in Swahili and Rafiki means friend! The views were gorgeous. After the hike, we went to Lake Naivasha to see some hippos and birds!
On Saturday, I went back to Ngong to run with Daniel again. We passed multiple world champion runners, including the male winner of this year’s London marathon! It’s wild how casually they run past each other and don’t think much about it.
These past 4 weeks have taught me so much about gratitude, patience, and love. I am so grateful for the experiences I’ve had; being this fortunate is not lost on me!
Until next time, Africa!
